Fresh Water Swimming Safety

Biomarine is approved to test fresh water bathing areas for bacteriological quality. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health currently accepts an E. coli count of <235/100 mL in fresh water bathing areas. E. coli originate solely from intestinal sources of humans and animals.

Another form of pollution originates from fecal coliform. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Water Pollution Control's 314 CMR 4.03 allows up to 200 fecal coliform/100 mL in Class B waters, and up to 1,000 fecal coliform/100 mL in Class C waters.

Class B waters are designated as a habitat for fish, other aquatic life and wildlife, and for primary and secondary contact recreation.

Class C waters are designated for the uses of protection and propagation of fish, other aquatic life and wildlife, and for secondary contact recreation.

Biomarine also provides full service sampling and analysis for many private and municipal beaches
